Maybe you are nervous or have other difficulties with speaking in public –

Speakers clubs provide a supportive environment where members can develop speaking skills gently and at their own pace. More experienced members give help and support to newer members as they learn the art of speaking in public.

Maybe you are not bad at public speaking but would like to be better –

Members evaluate speeches and contributions in a constructive and supportive manner which allows novices and experts alike to develop their speaking skills in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Arbroath Speakers Club meets in the Meadowbank, once a fortnight in the winter months, from 7.30 until around 9.45pm with an optional meal beforehand at 6.15.

We are serious about our intent to improve our skills but relaxed and friendly in the way we do it.

Evaluation Training

At the last moment the members decided that it would be a good idea to add a couple of meetings on at the end of our current session. It was agreed to make them different and to learn more about evaluation.

The final format of the evening was emailed to members like this

Firstly and most importantly, this is supposed to be a fun evening with a little lite learning! Can everyone attending please prepare a speech or just part of a speech to illustrate one of "Use of Gestures", "Use of Voice", "Vocabulary and Word Pictures" or the "Use of Notes"; it must not be more than five minutes long and may be less. On the night speakers will be picked at random. For each speaker two evaluators will be again be drawn at random. At the end of the speech each evaluator will give a very short evaluation highlighting a particular strength and possibly something that needs more work. Others in the audience may also comment.

The first evening was hailed as a success. Everyone who had prepared a speech was able to speak and everyone had at least one chance to evaluate. So the second evening will follow the same pattern.
