What are the benefits of Public Speaking?

This is a big, big question. Imagine being asked what are the benefits of being able to read or write. However the advantages of those two well know and well taught skills are enjoyed be nearly everyone to varying degrees.

The magic of being able to speak in public is far more powerful by its relative rarity. You will be joining an exclusive club whose membership opens up so many doors in life. Whether you are shy and retiring or brash and up front, proficiency in public speaking will drape you in a cloak of authority and substance.

To succeed in any endeavour we have to make our mark. We have to stand out. There is no one way to do this. Vive la différence! Your personality and style will influence how you achieve this. The opportunities that open up for you will also have an impact. The goals you choose, the passion you have for them and the timescale you set will also be important. However what will put you ahead of the rest is being able to get up and speak well in front of others.

The crazy thing is that everybody (yes - everybody) has this potential. If you can speak one-on-one then you can speak in public. Self-doubt and fear are the only things stopping you. Yes, there are tools that we will teach you to make your point more appropriately, more persuasively. However these are just skills that anyone can learn just as they learn to drive.

Where will I enjoy these benefits?

It will impact every part of your life where you interact with people and that effectively means every part of your life!

It certainly will be a major boost to your career. You will find that you might be more than a little embarrassed by the influence and gravitas it gives you. You will be perceived as more interesting and this is very attractive to people - watch your group of friends grow. However the biggest impact will be on your confidence. This is covered shortly.

Daniel Goleman has done extensive work which has created the current interest in Emotional Intelligence. It is now widely recognised as much more important to success than mere intellectual ability.

Why is this?

All life eventually becomes an exercise in dealing with people. We live in an immensely complex world where we are totally interdependent. Nothing can be achieved without the efforts of others. Sorry to disavow you of your treasured notions of independence but they are evanescent, fleeting will-o-the-wisps. Independence, in any real measure, simply does not exist.

You will succeed or fail in whatever you want to do by working with people. You will amplify your results through their good offices.

One of the key skills is your ability to communicate. The difference between you and others who are good on a one-to-one basis is your ability to stand up, speak up and become the focus of the group and its activity. You will become the icon, the logo, the representation of what they stand for. In short you will find yourself in a leadership role. You will have influence.

Confidence

As mentioned, everyone that can speak in private can speak in company. Learning to speak in public is really an exercise in gaining confidence.

What is the common critical success factor in anything that you aspire to - confidence. It has been said that everything starts with and idea - wrong! Ideas only come about because of a certain audacity to think of something new, something out of the ordinary. This can only happen while basking in confidence. Audacity and confidence are natural bedfellows. Further any nascent idea needs time to incubate and grow into something worthwhile and self-sustaining. It will wither without support. This cerebral greenhouse is called confidence.

It is more valuable than gold, champagne or even ink jet cartridges!

Persuaded? Want some of the stuff? You have come to the right place.

Make Your Mark

Success, as defined by many people under 50, is usually all about storing up enough wealth to secure their future. Most never progress beyond this, even if they become quite wealthy.

Some do. A much greater fear then occurs. "What have I done that is worthwhile? Does my life add up to much? " In short, we want to make their mark on society. We would like to do something that others value. We want our place in history, even if it is a very small place.

This is real leadership as to gain this we need to be of value. We need to be of service. We need to lead others to a better place.

Viktor Frankl created the 3rd Viennese School of Psychotherapy, after Freud (sex) and Adler (power). While in Auschwitz he witnessed people behaving with extraordinary generosity, amazing humanity, and often with total sacrifice. To make sense of this, he articulated what many now believe is the ultimate human imperative - to have a worthwhile life. He called this branch of studies - logography. Worthwhile in this context can cover just about anything but we must make its mark on society. It must be of value to others.

Nothing sets you up to make your impact on society quite like the ability to speak up in public. It is the tool that can magnify whatever you are trying to do. Others stop, turn and take notice of you, what you stand for, what you have to say.

Even the quietest mouse can roar!
